The crispy oat topping is sweet and delicious. I love to get a bite of both the topping and filling. Yum! Yum!
Is apple crisp the same as apple crumble?
Some of this can be regional but typically there is a very small difference between these two dishes. Both have a fruit filling and both are topped with a type of streusel.
The only difference between a crisp and crumble is the crisp has a topping with oats. Whereas the crumble does not have oats in the topping.
So really it all boils down to one ingredient that is the difference!
Ingredients:
- Golden Delicious Apples – Peeled and Chopped
- Sugar
- Ground Cinnamon
- Lemon Juice
- brown Sugar
- Old Fashioned Oats
- Flour
- Salt
- Butter -diced into small pieces
How to make an apple crisp:
First, go ahead and preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Also, spray an 8X8 baking pan with cooking spray.
Second, you will need a large mixing bowl. In the bowl combine the apples, sugar, lemon juice and part of the cinnamon to the bowl.
Then, mix everything so that you thoroughly coat all of the apple slices with the mixture.
Next, add the apple mixture into the baking pan.
Get out another mixing bowl. Mix together the brown sugar, oats, flour, salt and cinnamon. Make sure this is mixed well.
Once combined, cut the ½ cup cold butter into the mixture.
If you have a pastry cutter, it works great for this. If not, you use 2 forks to combine the butter and flour mixture together.
Finally, spread the topping over the apples in the baking dish. It takes about 40 to 50 minutes to bake.
You want the mixture to be bubbly and the topping is golden brown.
The topping should not have any mushy spots when finished baking.
Enjoy! We like it served warm.
Tips for the Best Apple Crisp with oats
Use Real Butter – Make sure to use real butter. It delivers a riche and the topping just tastes better. Also, resist the urge to add more butter. Too much butter in the topping can result in it being very greasy.
Do not use melted butter – I have tried it both ways and I feel like using cold butter works better when mixing up the apple crisp topping.
Use Unsalted Butter – Normally wen baking, you will make sure not to use salted butter. Keep unsalted butter in the fridge for any baking needs.
Try different Apples – We used Golden delicious apples but if you prefer a tart apple, try using Granny Smith apples. Both are delicious and you can use the type you prefer.
You do not have to peel the apples – I prefer to peel the apples for most of my apple dessert recipes, but you don’t have to. They are still
