Do you ever make a recipe and instantly start thinking about all the other ways you could make the recipe?

When I made the CrockPot Cinnamon Roll Monkey Bread, my brain whirled with ideas.

What other types of monkey bread could I make? Could I switch from sweet to savory monkey bread?

My brain was on a roll while I was intensely craving pizza. Enter Pepperoni Pizza Monkey Bread. LOL!

A craving turned into reality. We have been staying home as much as possible, so I knew I wanted to make a recipe with ingredients in the fridge and the pantry. This version of pizza monkey bread is basic with pepperoni.

Future versions will be more adventurous to see if they work. Maybe a ham and pineapple pizza monkey bread. I know! I know!

Pineapple is supposedly not supposed to be on pizza, but we like it.

No matter what ingredients you add, this pizza pull-apart bread is delicious! The combination of pepperoni and mozzarella cheese is always a good idea.

Add marina sauce for dipping and have an epic dinner or shareable snack.

Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make epic Pizza Monkey Bread! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

  • Refrigerated Biscuit Dough
  • Pepperoni
  • Olive Oil
  • Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Garlic Powder or Minced Garlic

Optional Garnishes: Oregano, Fresh Basil, Parsley, Fresh Herbs

Additional Toppings: Feel free to add your favorite pizza toppings! Mushrooms, black olives, and cooked sausage, or spinach would all be fantastic add-ins. Whole or sliced black olives work; cut them in half if you use whole black olives.

Refrigerator Biscuits - We used homestyle biscuits for our monkey bread but you could also use flakey layers. If you like a buttery crust you can easily use butter-flavored refrigerator biscuits.

Black Olives - Sliced Black Olives would work great if you have them. We only had whole black olives in the pantry so I cut them in half.

Pepperoni - I quartered the pepperoni so it would be in smaller pieces and spread more evenly throughout the biscuits. If you don't have time or don't want to cut the pepperoni you can easily just use whole circles. You can also use mini-pepperoni if you have it or can find it in the store. Turkey Pepperoni or veggie pepperoni would also work for this recipe.

Parmesan Cheese - I used shaved parmesan cheese because that is what I had in the refrigerator. You can also use grated parmesan if you have that available.

This is one of those recipes where you can adapt it to what you have available in the pantry/refrigerator and also to what you like on your pizza.

Optional Garnish - Fresh Parsley, a bowl of ranch dressing, or other sauces.

Equipment Needed

Non-Stick Cooking Spray: Greasing your pan will help ensure your pepperoni pizza monkey bread easily pops out of the pan.

Bundt Pan: I like the traditional look of monkey bread that comes with making it in a Bundt pan. If you don't have a Bundt pan, you can make this recipe in a 13x9 casserole dish. The cooking time will be shorter if you use the baking dish, so check it after 25-30 minutes.

Large Mixing Bowl: Use a bowl large enough to handle all ingredients. Even using a large bowl, I had to catch a few biscuits and pieces of pepperoni that flew out of the bowl. I also put a large cutting board under the bowl to scoop up any bits that flew out.

Wooden Spoons: I like to use two wooden spoons to mix the ingredients. You could use your hands if you ensure the ingredients do not mush together.

Knife/Cutting Board: You’ll need a knife and cutting board to cut the biscuits into quarters.

Measuring Tools: Teaspoons, Tablespoons, Cups

Serving Platter: I like to use a large enough circle serving plate so guests can easily reach the pizza bread and dip it in marinara sauce. Make sure you can hold it comfortably so you can invert the pizza monkey bread onto it.

Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: Preparing anything with premade biscuit dough too far in advance may affect how it bakes and rises, so it’s best to prepare your Pizza Monkey Bread dough close to when you plan to bake it.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container and enjoy them within three days.

Freezing/How to Freeze: Freeze leftovers in an airtight, freezer-safe container or bag and enjoy them within three months.

How to Reheat: You can reheat leftover servings using the microwave, air fryer, or oven, depending on how many portions you need to prepare.

Recipe Variations

Substitutions:

This recipe adapts to what you have in the pantry or refrigerator and what you like on your pizza.

Vegetarian Option: Replace the pepperoni with a meatless alternative to make this recipe vegetarian.

Vegan Option: In addition to the guidance for vegetarians, vegans should swap the refrigerator biscuits, mozzarella, and Parmesan with plant-based substitutes.

Gluten-Free: Make gluten-free Pizza Monkey Bread using gluten-free refrigerator biscuits.

Smaller Serving Size: The written recipe makes eight servings, enough to fit a Bundt pan. Halve it for a smaller portion or divide it across mini Bundt pans for individual Pizza Monkey Bread. We also have Pepperoni Pizza Toast as an alternative that works if you’re not cooking for a large group.

Make It Spicy: Add red pepper flakes to this recipe if you want more spice.

Larger Group/More Servings: Use the slider in the recipe card to get the correct ingredient amounts for scaling the recipe up.

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 7 grams of sugar per serving. The final nutritional content depends on your ingredients, so check each label and make substitutions if this is a dietary concern.

Tips for the Best Pizza Monkey Bread

  • Don’t forget to preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • You want to spray the Bundt pan with non-stick spray. This step will help make serving the pizza monkey bread so much easier.
  • Pizza dough will work for this recipe but may not puff up like the biscuit pieces.
  • Feel free to double the Italian seasoning and garlic to add more flavor. Onion powder also works great.

  • If your monkey bread turns from golden brown to too dark, you can cover the Bundt pan with aluminum foil for the remaining baking time.
  • We love using Marinara Sauce for dipping. You can also use spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce. We have even used a bowl of ranch dressing as a dip for this Pizza Monkey Bread.
