The decision is based on a portfolio ofqualifications, including prior academic performance, work experience, entranceexam scores (such as the GMAT or GRE) andletters of recommendation. We know if pursuing an MBA is part of your career goals, you likely have a specific occupation in mind. That is why at Florida State University we have designed our MBA curriculum to suit you. As an MBA student you take a core set of courses aimed at strengthening your managerial skills in the fundamentals ranging from accounting and marketing to operations and strategy. Then, you may round out your degree with either courses that build your specialized expertise in a specific business focus or a slate of courses that will prepare you for any chosen career.

FULL-TIME MBA OPTIONS

Business Analytics*

The Business Analytics specialization introduces students to statistical and data management techniques that are used to derive business insights from data. It also provides students with a broad understanding of current analytics tools and techniques, when to use them and how to interpret analytics results in a variety of contexts.

Finance* (undergraduate finance degree required)

The Finance specialization teaches management of money and effective allocation of resources and capital management. It provides exposure to multiple areas, such as capital markets, corporate financial decision-making, portfolio management and the global financial system. The most sophisticated databases and technologies are used in all classes. Having this expertise opens career opportunities in most areas of the financial sector with good earning potential.

* MBA specializations in the specialty master's degree disciplines of Business Analytics, Finance, Management Information Systems, and Risk Management and Insurance will require prior approval from that program's director.

Part-time MBA students attending in the evenings on campus may choose full-time elective courses and specializations; however, these are typically offered during the work day. Joint MBA degrees with the colleges of Law or Social Work do not have specializations. FSU's MBA diplomas do not note specializations, but graduates are encouraged to share their earned expertise on their resumes and digital profiles for professional networking websites such as LinkedIn.

Degree Requirements

Prerequisites

The Florida State University MBA is designed for both working professionals with extensive professional experience and individuals who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in their previous academic work and who have completed a significant internship or other work experience.Admission is competitive, and allapplicants must have a bachelor's degree froma regionally accredited institution. Previous coursework in business is notrequired,but all applicants are expected to have a general knowledge ofeconomics, finance, accounting, statistics, calculus and managementprinciples.

While prerequisites are not required for this program, the MBAfaculty strongly recommends the completion of prep courses by allapplicantswho have not taken previous coursework in accounting. A preparatorycoursecalled FSU Fundamentals of Financial Accounting Tutorial (modules 1-4)is an alternative, offered online by Cambridge BusinessPublishers.

The MBA program requires 39 credit hours. The current corecurriculum requires the following courses:

Note: Online and evening MBA programs may replace the Professional Development requirement with a 3-hour elective course. In addition to the core courses listed above, students will take an additional 12 hours of elective coursework (9 for full-time students who enroll in the required Professional Development course.) Elective course options will include applications of analytical tools in specific business disciplines, such as analytics, marketing, human resources, operations, finance or real estate.

INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS

International applicants whose native language is not English and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree in an English-speaking country are required to take an English Language Proficiency exam and submit official test results in order to be admitted to Florida State University. Financial Assistance

Assistantships

The College of Business offers a limited number of assistantships to accelerated, full-time MBA students only. Online and part-time evening students are not eligible for these awards.

  • Recipients of these awards are required to work approximately 10 hours a week.
  • These awards provide a stipend of approximately $1,500 per term for three terms.
  • These awards do NOT cover certain non-academic fees of approximately $50 - $80 per graduate hour.
  • All students admitted to the accelerated MBA program are considered for the competitive assistantships.

ACG 5026 Financial Reporting and Managerial Control
Provides a basic understanding of accounting systems and the financial statements to lay a foundation for financial statement analysis. BUL 5810 The Legal and Ethical Environment of Business
An introduction to the legal, political and social institutions which affect business activity, with an emphasis on public law and governmental regulation. Landmark legislation and judicial decisions will be examined. 3 credit hours, on campus and online

FIN 5425 Problems in Financial Management
An advanced case course including an in-depth study into selected topics such as valuation theory and the investment, financing, and dividend decisions of the firm. (Prerequisite: ACG 5026.) 3 credit hours, on campus and online

ISM 5021 Information and Technology Management
Through readings, cases, and projects, students will confront issues associated with technology strategy (what to pursue and how to pursue it) and implementation (how to make it happen). MAN 5245 Organizational Behavior
A dynamic examination of managerial concepts of human behavior in work organizations. Topics include motivation, leadership, reward systems, training, recruiting, selection, and job design. 3 credit hours, on campus and online

MAN 5501 Production and Operations Management
Develops a conceptual framework which is useful in describing the nature of the operations function, with emphasis on identifying basic problems in managing the operations of an organization. 3 credit hours, on campus and online

MAN 5716 Economics and Business Conditions
A combination of statistics and managerial economics designed to illustrate statistical methods and techniques by applying them to basic managerial issues using elementary calculus and basic statistical programs (Excel and SAS) for regressions, testing hypotheses, and applying other statistical methods to important issues in managerial economics. Also, problems of managing the firm in relation to the changing economic environment; analysis of major business fluctuations and development of forecasting techniques. 3 credit hours, on campus and online

MAN 5721 Strategy and Business Policy

The goals of this course are to describe important fixed income securities and markets, and develop tools for valuing fixed income securities and managing interest rate risk. FIN 5605 Multinational Financial Management

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the major issues underlying the organizational utilization of databases and database management systems. Theoretical, conceptual and practical concerns in the design and implementation of database systems are discussed. Designed to be relevant for all professionals confronting project-related tasks, with particularattention given to the information systems context. ISM 5327 Corporate Information Security
Examines corporate information security from several perspectives. This course will introduce state-of-the-art Business Intelligence and Analytics techniques to discover knowledge from massive data sets using a hands-on approach. Examines knowledge management from an organizational perspective. Topics include principles; strategic issues; systems design and development; as well as knowledge creation, capture, capture, sharing, and application. (Available for Business Analytics specialization.) 3 credit hours, online

ISM 5560 Data Management
This course will discuss various data-related issues in business analytics and introduce the best practices, underlying principles, and emerging technologies in data management. Specifically, the course will cover 1) foundational data management concepts, 2) best practices in managing big data, and 3) unstructured data management. MAN 5305 Personnel and Human Resource Management
This course covers strategic practices and problems in human resource management. Topics include job analysis, selection, training, compensation and other employee rights.

MAN 5331 Compensation Management
This course exposes students to the conceptual elements, application of, and nature of organizational compensation programs. Students learn how compensation programs are designed and administered. Students gain practical knowledge of and skills in the field as well as an understanding of how the discipline connects to the broader field of organizational management. This course focuses on the important role that training and development plays in today's organizations. The course will explore numerous strategies and methods used by organizations in a variety of industries and sectors to improve employee and organizational performance. The course focuses on key issues in staffing employees in organizations. Students will gain an understanding of the relevance of staffing to today's organizations. MAN 5375 HR Analytics
The course focuses on the analysis and application of a company's HR data to uncover insights that inform HR strategies, process changes, and investments – with the goal of improving organizational performance (i.e., driving business outcomes). Students will learn about theory and research regarding drivers of employee performance, retention, and engagement, as well as the critical HR metrics that are important for business outcomes. MAR 5409 Business-to-Business Sales and Marketing
Focuses on building and managing relationships with business customers. It will cover business-to-business management issues, with an emphasis on topics at the mid-to-upper management level. Combined BS/MBA Pathway

Top FSU undergraduates majoring in finance, human resource management, management information systems, marketing, real estate or risk management/insurance may get a jump-start on an MBA by applying to a combined pathway. Accepted students will be able to substitute three graduate courses for undergraduate ones and double-count up to nine required credit hours toward both bachelor's and master's degrees. Students are eligible if they have an overall grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.4, an overall, upper-division GPA of at least 3.2, and an upper-division GPA of at least 3.2 in their specific major's coursework. Students accepted to the combined pathway will still be required to apply separately to the MBA program and meet all MBA application requirements. Combined pathway students do not have to start their master's degree immediately after completing their undergraduate work.
