Important Notice – Replacement Qualification from September 2024

From September 2024 the new 6504-51 Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (FE and Skills) will replace the 6502-51/52 Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (or ‘DET’) as the recognised teaching qualification for the FE and Skills sector. At that point the DET will no longer be available for new registrations. The 6502-31/32 Level 3 Award and 6502-41/42 Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training are both unaffected and will continue to be available.

These qualifications are for those who work, or want to work as teachers/trainers in the further education and skills sector, including thosewho are not in a teaching role, or who have just started a teaching role, and include Award-size qualifications for thosewho want a short qualification to enable them to make career choices.

Candidates who have already achieved some Learning and Development units can carry these forward into this qualification.The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) has produced revised guidance for the qualifications in Education and Training available across all Awarding Organisations. What Is Involved In Studying This Course?

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector, such as:
• the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
• inclusive teaching and learning approaches
• assessment of learners
• facilitating learning and development for individuals
• facilitating learning and development in groups
• understanding principles and practices of assessment

What Careers Can This Lead To?

These qualifications can help you to progress in teaching/training roles in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector. These include:

  • Public sector organisations
  • Private sector organisations
  • Further Education, Adult and Community Education.
What Is Involved With Delivering This Course?

Staff delivering this qualification must be able to demonstrate that they meet the following occupational expertise requirements. They must have:
• a teaching or training qualification or
• substantial evidence of successful teaching experience in an education and/or training context
• access to appropriate guidance and support, and
• on-going participation in related programme quality assurance processes

Staff must also be occupationally competent and technically knowledgeable in education and/or training

Level 3

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introduction to teaching that will give an insight into the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching sessions and how to assess and give constructive feedback.

These qualifications can help you to progress in teaching/training and support rolesroles in a wide range of organisations in the lifelong learning sector. These include:

Public sector organisations
Private sector organisations
Further Education, Adult and Community Education.

Level 4

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. It may be possible for pre-service teachers/trainers (defined as those who are not formally contracted as teachers/trainers) to also complete this qualification. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment.

Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

Level 5

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification which has a teaching/training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers/trainers in England. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. Whilst doing this, candidates will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.
