Do you love homemade white bread as much as my family? Are you baking that basic white bread loaf that disappears in the middle of the night when you leave it out on the counter?

Yep, me, too! I made this basic bread machine white bread recipe with sweetened condensed milk in it (that’s the secret ingredient!) and I knew it had to be great!

The first time I followed the recipe exactly and made the dough in the bread maker and then did the braid. This time I wanted to see if it would work as a basic white loaf and save me some time.

This dense bread is perfect for sandwiches if you like it thick and tasty. (Cheese toast is the best!) If you don’t own a bread machine this Jiffy Cornbread with Creamed Corn recipe is my readers all time favorite recipe.

  • warm water
  • sweetened condensed milk
  • salt
  • melted butter
  • bread flour
  • active dry yeast

Directions

Pour warm water first in the bread machine. Hot tap water is fine.

Add sweetened condensed milk.

Add salt.

Pour in melted butter.

Gently add bread flour.

Add yeast as the last ingredient.

Set bread machine for basic setting and press start! Easy peasy!

If necessary add a few drops of water in the initial cycle if dough seems dry.

After completion remove bread and allow to cool.

Get to know your bread machine

I know many people are talented enough to just make bread from scratch and bake in a bread pan. But I am seriously in love with my bread machine, even though it’s a little quirky like me. The weather and humidity affect how the dough rises.

You don’t have to be a scientist, but you might have to spend a little time getting to know your machine. In other words, practice makes perfect! Read the bread machine manufacturer instructions for any notes specific to your machine.

I have found if I can check on the dough a few minutes into the cycle and see if it’s mixed well and has enough moisture, then the bread has a better chance of being pretty and tasting delicious!

If I need to I’ll add a few drops of moisture to the dough. Sometimes the bread machine does its thing and the bread bakes but it isn’t pretty!

This was an extremely easy recipe and it disappeared from my house! This white bread loaf has a wonderful crust color and and makes a great piece of toast with butter, cinnamon and sugar.

FAQs about Bread Machine White Bread

You can use regular all-purpose flour, or American white bread flour to make bread in the bread maker. I chose bread flour which will give you a loaf that is a bit more chewy but still delicious!

Instant yeast is the best choice for the bread machine. It comes in small packets or jars, called “rapid rise, quick-rise” or “bread machine yeast” due to its fast-acting nature. It doesn’t have to be activated first and can be added immediately into the mixture with the rest of the ingredients.

The manufacturer’s instructions will tell you to add the liquid ingredients first, then the dry ingredients. The instant yeast always goes in last. This helps ensure the yeast is separated from the liquids until the kneading begins which is an important step to follow.

Substitutions

Do NOT substitute evaporated milk for the sweetened condensed milk. The tenderness and soft texture would be effected.

Bread Storage

You can leave the finished bread on your counter but the bread loses flavor and texture after a few days. Wrap in plastic wrap for freshness.

Freeze it by the slice and you can take out one piece at a time.

Some tips for making this recipe

  • I bake two loaves in order to use up all the sweetened condensed milk. (Or you can just lick the spoon yourself if you love the sweetness!)
  • Don’t be afraid to try this recipe again if your first loaf doesn’t turn out. Sometimes it takes a while to get the knack of it, especially if the conditions in your home change – heat, humidity, air, etc.
  • The more experience you’ve had using your bread maker the more successful you’ll be. Always make sure and add the wet ingredients first! (And just read the comments below to see how this sweet white bread turned out for my readers!)
