WHAT IS BOURSIN CHEESE?

If reading this leads to you asking “what is Boursin cheese?”, you are obviously not as cheese obsessed as my sister and I.

Boursin cheese is a brand of soft triple cream cheese mixed with flavorful aromatic ingredients. It makes a wonderful spread for crackers and bread, and is creamy enough to scoop up with sliced vegetables.

While Boursin has a lot of flavor varieties, the Garlic and Fine Herbs variety is usually what people mean when they say Boursin cheese.

My sister brings a fruit and cheese board to almost every holiday gathering (especially Easter!), and it always includes a mound of creamy Boursin cheese.

HOMEMADE BOURSIN CHEESE RECIPE

Because Boursin cheese is pretty pricey, I was really excited to work on a homemade Boursin cheese recipe. This is not authentic Boursin cheese, but rather inspired by the triple cream delight.

The listed ingredients for Boursin cheese are Pasteurized cultured milk and cream, dried garlic, salt, white pepper, parsley, and dried chives. But of course, I had to get creative and play with the ingredients a bit.

To get a creamy texture, I used a mix of cream cheese, soft goat cheese, and butter. If you don’t have goat cheese, or want to save a little more money, you can just double the cream cheese.

I also included a few tablespoons of parmesan cheese for some umami goodness.

While store bought Boursin only has a couple of herbs listed in the ingredients, I wanted my homemade Boursin cheese recipe to be packed with my favorite herbs.

I used fresh herbs because I grow them and love the color and flavor of fresh from the garden herbs. But you could definitely use dried herbs and still get some amazing herb flavor.

For the garlic, I chose the stronger flavor of a couple of fresh garlic cloves rather than dried garlic. We love garlic flavor, so you can swap for ½ teaspoon of dried garlic if you aren’t garlic fiends like we are.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE BOURSIN

  • Start by getting your cream cheese, butter, and goat cheese to room temperature.
  • Crush two garlic cloves in a garlic press.
  • In a large bowl, mix the cream cheese, goat cheese, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, butter, and garlic. You can mix them by hand, or with an electric mixer. You could also use a food processor if you’d like.
  • Finely chop some parsley, dill, basil, chives and thyme, then mix into the cheeses.
  • Mix in ½ teaspoon of dried marjoram, and ½ teaspoon of fresh cracked black pepper.
  • Pack the homemade Boursin into a bowl and refrigerate until firm.
  • Once firm, invert onto a serving plate and set on the counter. If the cheese spread doesn’t easily remove from the bowl in about 10 minutes, you can carefully slide a spoon or fork around the inside of the bowl to help get the cheese out.
  • Serve your homemade Boursin cheese at room temperature with your favorite crackers. We like to include honey for drizzling as well!
