How accurate is the BBC Weather app? ›

In a year-long study of 22 global weather providers by meteorological-analytics service ForecastWatch, BBC Weather ranked second-last for accuracy, while the Met Office came eighth (see Table 7 in the report at www.snipca.com/51012).

BBC Weather is the department of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) responsible for both the preparation and the broadcasting of weather forecasts. On 6 February 2018, BBC Weather changed supplier from the government Met Office to MeteoGroup after an open competition.

The BBC Weather app allows you to see weather information based on your current location. When you first install the app, we'll ask you whether you wish to enable this option. You can turn this feature on/off at any time via Settings > Apps > BBC Weather > Permissions > Locations.

Every site is never 100% right in the weather forecast but the BBC is more accurate than most others.

Weather Forecasts

As part of the tender assessment process, the accuracy of trial forecasts provided by different companies tendering for the contract were assessed. During this process the Met Office was found to be the most accurate of the companies that tendered for the contract.

There are multiple weather forecasting models. Ventusky is a good way of comparing some of them. The BBC get their forecasts from Meteogroup, not the Met office. BBC declined to renew their contract with the Met Office a few years ago and went with Meteogroup as a cheaper option.

Maps: The weather maps are produced using MeteoGroup data once every three hours whereas the text-based data refreshes on an hourly basis, meaning the map data can sometimes lag behind the 14-day forecast spot data.

It's not chance of rain. The percentage means How much of your current area will see rain. If you're in NYC and it's says 99% then all of NYC will have rain today. If it instead says 10% then only a small part of NYC will see rain. It's more a measure of how big the rain clouds are.

Here are the phrases that we use that correspond to different ranges of PoP: 15-24% = slight chance of rain. 25-54% = chance of rain. 55-74% = rain likely. 75-100% = definite rain.

20% means there is a 20% that at least a single drop of rain falls at a specific spot in the area. If for a specific area there is a 100% chance of rain (they are 100% sure it will rain somewhere in the region) , but the rain will most likely only cover 20% of that area, the chance is reported as 20%.
